We Make Children’s Vision Care Fun!

Having your children’s vision examined regularly is important, especially if they are showing signs of impaired vision. Children can show signs of certain eye conditions, such as myopia, early on and we start seeing children for regular exams starting at 6 months old.

20/20 Vision Care is thrilled to have 20/20 Kids, an office dedicated to children’s vision care. We have made 20/20 Kids a fun environment for children to receive excellent vision services.

Children’s Eyes are Growing & Developing

Did you know that as we grow with age our eyes are growing and developing as well? During that time children can experience problems with their vision when trying to learn and grow.

To assist children with their growth, development, and health, it is recommended that children receive their first exam between 6 to 9 months, have another exam between 2 and 5 years old, and then receive yearly exams from 6 to 19.

What Is Tested in a Children’s Eye Exam?

A comprehensive eye exam for children is very similar to that of an adult. An infant’s prescription can even be tested using the Plus Optix tool. Many of the same factors are discussed and tested in a child’s eye exam such as:

Medical History

Your optometrist will need to know if a child has any known medical, illnesses, or vision concerns before starting with the exam.

Sharpness, also referred to as visual acuity, is tested to see how well a child can see detail. This is usually tested using symbols or other shapes for young children who cannot read letters.

Eye coordination and movement are also tested in children to ensure there are no underlying conditions that may be delaying this.

The eye focus, or refraction, is tested to identify any focusing issues such as nearsightedness or farsightedness in children.

Overall eye health is, of course, tested as well during a routine exam. Optometrists are checking to make sure the structure of the eye is normal and that there are no abnormalities.
